The project phase is the core of every Trekforce Worldwide expedition. Before the project phase can begin, every volunteer will participate in jungle training. Our project phases last from 2 weeks to 2 months.
Along with 2 qualified and experienced expedition leaders and 2 expedition medics, your team has the first challenge of getting to your project site, by a combination of truck, aircraft, boat and foot. Teams may have to trek for several hours or more to reach their project site, as they can often be based in remote locations. The first task is then to organise the base camp, often set deep in the jungle, surrounded by beautiful scenery and exotic wildlife. This will become home for the next few weeks.

At the heart of Trekforce Worldwide lies the community or development project. Your team will start work on your project, which will be completed by the end of the expedition. We take the responsibility that we have to the communities and the people we work alongside very seriously. All of our projects are suggested and promoted by our community partners in the countries in which we work. We have long standing relationships with our project partners that are vitally important, and our full time in-country staff ensure that each project is as valuable to the community as it will be to our volunteers.

All the projects are organised on behalf of one of our many partners overseas, such as local NGOs, international scientific organisations, community groups and occasionally government departments, such as the Ministry for Forestry.
Trekforce ensure that our volunteers will have truly done something worthwhile that will benefit our project partners for years to come. Your project will be varied and you will not always know exactly what the projects on an expedition are until you attend your UK briefing event 2 months before you leave, but it will be based around rainforest conservation. During jungle training, you will get an opportunity to select which project you would prefer to be based on, if there is more than 1 per expedition.
Past projects have included erecting scientific research stations, trail clearing, building eco-tourist huts, collecting plant and soil samples for scientific research, clearing trails and building boardwalks to allow volunteers access to areas of National Park.
We employ local craftsmen to help out with the project and we don't expect anyone to have picked up a hammer or chisel before. All you need is enthusiasm and commitment and we will train you to do the rest!
At the end of your project phase you will hand your project back over to your project partners who will thank you during an opening ceremony. This is an extremely rewarding part of the expedition when you see what all of your hard work has produced. In the past, the work our volunteers have done has attracted the media and the opening ceremony has been televised, or reported in local newspapers. This just demonstrates the impact the work Trekforce and its volunteers have on the areas visited.
During your project phase, your team may have some time to explore and enjoy the amazing area that you are working in. This may take the form of treks to waterfalls or swimming areas, visits to unihabited islands, or trips to traditional villages for friendly football matches!
