The 20th - 21st November saw volunteers for the Trekforce gap year to Belize head to Dulwich scout camp in South London for a briefing event. This was a chance to meet each other, medics and leaders before they head to Central America in February 2008 to complete a worthwhile project, language course and teaching placement.
Volunteers had the opportunity to learn more about what they will be doing on their gap year, what they will be doing on project, the kit they need and have any questions answered. The event started with ice breakers where the group got stuck into problem solving tasks and team building games.
There was also the chance to try out the hammocks, which the group will call home for up to 2 months while they live in the jungle on their gap year. There were talks by leaders on the role of the group when they get into the jungle, and medics spoke to the group about first aid and their medical kits.
There were lots of laughs over the 2 days and the group left feeling excited at the adventures and challenges that lie ahead, as well as satisfied that they were going to be participating in a worthwhile project.
Eloise who attended the event said ‘It was great to see that Trekforce exists because you are all passionate about what you do, rather than it being a purely money-making Gap Year company like so many of them. I really feel that I am going to take part in a worthwhile experience.'
