The proper mindset is the most important tool in survival situations. You should not ever be presented with the need to use the skills you have learnt for a proper survival situation, but it is an interesting lesson on the methods of applying yourself should survival be the imminent issue.

The very first thing that you must do is to STOP. The word 'STOP' forms a useful mnemonic:

  • Stop - Actually do that. Take your pack off and sit down. You may go wandering in your confusion and become even more lost.
  • Think - Review what you learned at jungle training, write down what you know about your location / predicament. People will be looking for you immediately.
  • Organise - What have you got with you? How will it help to obtain water, shelter, fire or food? How can you signal for help?
  • Plan - Make a plan that allows for the daylight left. Look to the next day and fill up the time – there is always lots to do.

You will be taught useful methods for each of these steps during jungle training.
