Trekforce use a number of methods of communication to ensure the safety of our expedition members.

VHF

Very High Frequency is used on projects to communicate with our fieldbase in country for project reports and casualty evacuation requests. The more people that are aware of how it works, the safer an entire expedition is. You will be taught about using the radio and the voice procedure that goes with it.

GPS

Global Positioning Satellite is used to locate exactly where you are in the jungle, and is vital for determining your exact latitude and longitude when on trek. On project site, all areas are recorded with know GPS location details.

Satphones

Satellite Phones are a backup incase there is bad reception on the VHF radio. We use two types of satphone: Globalstar, smaller handheld units which can pick a signal relatively easily, and Inmarsat which has a stronger signal but requires more of the sky to be seen through the jungle canopy. Again, it is important for every member to be familiar with these types of equipment.

EPIRBs

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a last resort method of communication should all other forms of communication be unavailable, and there is a serious situation. Upon activation, the unit sends a distress call, which is transmitted to the UK with details of position and serial number. Trekforce UK is then able to notify the in-country fieldbase to initiate the CASEVAC procedures and rescue.
