Your camp will be your communal home for the duration of your project, so it is important to create it in the interests of hygiene and conservation. When selecting a camp site, it should be located near a reliable source of water, out of the flood plain and devoid of hazards such as dead wood suspended in the canopy. A good camp needs areas for cooking, washing, slops, water collection, latrines, socialising and clearly marked trails, and jungle training gives you the chance to perfect this technique before arriving at your project.
The camp admin duties (cooking, clearing, firewood collection) are
run by a rota of two members from the group on a daily basis. Read more about cooking...
How do you go to the toilet in the jungle? In a pit of course! A long trench is dug and a screen built. When you have finished, you throw some dirt in to cover it up. It is important not to dig the trench deeper, as the most biologically active soil is near the surface, and anything deeper than a foot will take a longer time to break down.
You could even make a throne...!
