80% of Guyana is covered in tropical rainforest. Along with five other countries, the rainforest here is part of the Amazon, the largest tropical rainforest in the world. According to Conservation International, the Guiana's region of the Amazon is home to the largest pristine and undisturbed rainforest in the world. This is where we will be trekking! The second main natural vegetation is savannah grassland, split into two distinct areas, one in the South West of the country, the second in the North East. The main population areas are along the coast, with some 90% of the 750,000 population living here.
Aside from our gap year expedition treks, we also have a bespoke extreme trek in Guyana.
The climate is tropical, the country being located just a few degrees north of the equator. There are distinct dry and wet seasons. On the coast there are two from May to July and November to January. In the interior there is just one long wet season from May to September.
Wildlife is abundant, from poison-arrow frogs to howler and spider monkeys. The chance of not seeing anything is virtually non-existent. From the first day to the last of previous treks we were treated by seeing something unique or fascinating. The last trek saw caiman in small mountain rivers, a rare tree-frog (phylamaduca) (only the fourth of its kind to be found), and the famous Harpy Eagle. You may even be lucky to see the rare and endangered Cock-on-the-Rock bird with its florescent orange plume and its unique manner of males dancing in a peculiar head-bobbing to woo and attract females.
You could be trekking through the Iwokrama Mountains, or in the foothills of the Pakaraimas. Whether you are trekking to the base of the largest single drop waterfall in the world, canoeing up the Potaro river or spending time with the Vaqeroes of the Savannah land, Guyana has so much to offer and Trekforce can take you to the remoter parts of Guyana.
