Where can I go on a Gap Year?

You might have guessed by now, but you can go anywhere! That's why the idea of a gap year is so exciting, but also at the same time a little daunting at having to choose from over 200 countries.

Many people on their gap year buy a round the world ticket, travelling through south-east Asia, on to Australia and New Zealand and back through some Pacific islands and Los Angeles.Other round the world tickets can take you through a specific continent that you may be wanting to see, such as South America.

Trekforce's expeditions are in remote areas of far away countries that hardly any other travellers will ever get to see, yet are still near some of the major routes for independent travellers. We are aware of the need for adventure with real purpose, so our countries are generally off the beaten track, with little fear of bumping into hoards of tourists, especially when you're in the heart of the jungle!

An expedition or teaching placement with Trekforce on your gap year can easily be combined with flights along these routes, as many tickets are sold on basis of flexibility, and short detours can be made at relatively low cost.

Papua New Guinea

Being only 2.5 hours north of Australia, Papua New Guinea is the most accessible Trekforce destination on the 'classic' round the world trip.

Belize

In the heart of Central America, Belize is great starting point for exploring the rest of this continent. With so many countries squeezed into this small isthmus between north and south America, it is a favourite destination with travellers being able to see and do a lot. Onwards, only 4 hours away is the major US hub, Los Angeles, for being able to join into a round the world trip.

Borneo

This Malaysian island of Borneo is surrounded by many other countries in south-east Asia such as Thailand, Laos and Vietnam to the north, and only a short flight from the regional long distance hubs of Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.

Guyana

South America is another popular destination for backpackers and Guyana, like Belize, can be a good stepping stone to the rest of the continent or the Caribbean.
