Only 7% of students defer their univeristy course to take a gap year. In reality the number is higher as many wait until they A-level results to decide which direction they want to take.
All universities differ in their opinions of gap years, so if you are thinking of taking a gap year, check with the university you are applying for beforehand. A properly structured gap year is supported by UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admission System) and ARG (Association of Graduate Recruiters).
The key is that universities generally look positively upon structured gap years, where students take part in something more than a solely a round the world trip. This could be completing a conservation project or teaching in schools, which helps give a breadth of experience that a lot of universities are looking for in applications.
It is important to finalise all placements before you go away, as it can be a bit difficult trying to choose your accommodation when you're 6,000 miles away!
