Amanda Allan, Belize Volunteer
'Trekforce was the only organisation that offered different phases and allowed you to complete an entire project. I loved working as a team to finish the project and I learnt so much about a different culture and way of life.'Trekforce work on behalf of government departments, scientific and conservation organisations and indigenious community groups and have an excellent reputation for completing the most worthwhile projects to ensure your energy and commitment is going to those who need it. Trekforce's diverse range of programmes, from four weeks up to five months in length, are flexible so you can do a combination of activities including rainforest conservation projects, teaching, trekking, diving and language courses.
On a team conservation project you will work with a variety of people of all ages and backgrounds, learning about team work, resilience and project management. You'll see breathtaking sights, push your physical limits and return safe in the knowledge that that you've achieved something amazing. Each unique project is ideal for a short break of one or two months or can be combined with independent travel as part of a longer break.
After a project you can also incorporate other options such as a Spanish course or a teaching placement. Language skills are vitally important for both work and travel and as the third most spoken language in the world, a course in a Spanish speaking community will stand you in good stead. A two month teaching placement will test your initiative and people management skills and increase your confidence and communication abilities. Even in a short time you can make a real difference to the standards of education available to children in a small community and you'll have an in-depth understanding of the culture.
Any of these options will give you great sense of achievement and you add to the experience with independent travel in these fascinating areas of the world. You can read more about project and placement options to Guyana and Peru, Sabah and Sarawak ,and Belize and Guatemala.
