What exactly will you get out of it? There are many different reasons for taking a break from work and each individual is looking to get something different from the experience.

Even those working in a job they love can feel the strain and want to take a step back. A career gap can help you do just that. It gives you the change to get away, relax and see things from a different perspective.
Many people feel like they’ve been funnelled into a career without the chance to draw breath and think ‘is this really what I want to do?' A career break can give you the space to see things more clearly and find out what you want from life. You may decide you miss your job and return with a new enthusiasm, or perhaps you’ll change your view on life and work and decide to do something completely different.
Maybe you’ve gone from education straight to work and never had the time nor means to travel. Maybe you’ve already been bitten by the bug (metaphorically of course) and you feel it’s time to get away again. Most of us can’t deny we’re probably lacking adventure and excitement in our lives so now could be your chance to change that.
A career break isn’t just about lounging on a tropical beach for six months. If you combine a bit of beach life with taking part in a project or placement you can come back with a whole new set of skills. Team work, problem solving, leadership and determination are all skills which look fantastic on your CV and show your future (and current) employers that you’ve made the most of your time overseas. In job applications and interviews everyone can give examples of UK work experience but how many can show they used team work skills to construct a warden’s post deep in the jungle or used their initiative when teaching a group of children English? You’ll stand out from the other candidates as a more well rounded and interesting person.
A career break can be a positive experience on many different levels. It doesn’t have to be a self indulgent experience because although you will no doubt have many exciting experiences, you can give something back as well. You personally can make a real difference by volunteering overseas, even for just a short time, and it will certainly make your break a more challenging and rewarding experience.
